The Temazcal — a ceremonial sweat lodge of Mesoamerican origin — is one of the most powerful purification rituals in existence. The Temazcal: Far More Than a Sauna

The word Temazcal comes from the Nahuatl temazcalli: "house of steam". But reducing this practice to a simple steam bath would miss its very essence.

The Temazcal is a sacred space — built in the shape of a dome, representing the womb of Mother Earth — where heat, steam, heated stones (abuelitas, the "grandmothers"), medicinal plants, poetic prose guidance, and ceremonial songs combine to create an experience of total rebirth.

It is, quite literally, entering the womb of the Earth and emerging renewed.

Our Temazcal Ceremony

At Sítio dos Oriundos, every Temazcal is a unique ceremony — never a standardized service.

The stones are heated for hours before the ceremony in the sacred fire. Each stone carries an intention. The medicinal plants — chosen according to the season and the needs of the group — scent the steam with therapeutic aromas: eucalyptus, copal, local herbs from the Atlantic Forest.

Inside, in the warm darkness of the dome, participants are guided through four symbolic doorways — the four directions, the four elements. Each doorway is an opportunity to release what no longer serves.

The ceremonial songs create a vibration that reaches beyond words. The lead guide watches over each participant, adjusting the intensity and honoring the rhythm of each person.

Who Can Participate?

The Temazcal is accessible to the vast majority of people in good health. Some contraindications exist (advanced pregnancy, certain cardiac conditions). A preliminary consultation with our facilitators is always included.

The experience adapts: it is always possible to step outside, to take a break. The goal is not endurance — it is transformation.
